The North Alabama Conference Lay Ministry Team invites everyone—laity and clergy—to attend the Laity Luncheon.
The Luncheon will be at noon on Monday, June 6 in East Hall 2, immediately following the morning plenary session. The Laity Luncheon is a long-standing tradition of the North Alabama Conference and a great way to celebrate the connection. The seated meal will feature a menu of house salad, top sirloin steak, roasted potatoes, green beans, rolls, iced tea, water, coffee and dessert.
Tickets are $19 and must be purchased through online reservations at www.umcna.org/ac16reservations by May 15. No tickets will be available on site.
Dr. Jan Davis, a retired astronaut, spent more than 670 hours in space as a mission specialist over the course of her three space shuttle flights, during which she orbited the Earth 325 times.
She began her National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) career at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in 1979 as an aerospace engineer. After supporting major NASA programs and projects, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, she became a team lead and lead engineer for the redesign of the Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster External Tank attach ring.
In 1987, Dr. Davis was selected to join the Astronaut corps at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. In 1998, she became the Director of the Human Exploration and Development of Space Independent Assurance Office for NASA Headquarters. Prior to retiring from NASA in 2005, Dr. Davis served first as the Director of the Flight Projects Directorate at the Marshall Center, and then as Director of Safety and Mission Assurance at MSFC.
Dr. Davis was elected to the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame and the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame. In 2002, she was given the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive, and she has received NASA’s Exceptional Service Medal, Space Medal and Outstanding Leadership Medal. In 2012, she received Auburn University’s Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2013, she received the Christine Richard Girl Scouts Lifetime Achievement Award. She has also received the Momentum Award for Courage and was named in 2015 as one of the Women Who Shape Alabama.
Currently, she is Vice President and Deputy General Manager of Jacobs Engineering and Science Services and Skills Augmentation Group at MSFC in Huntsville.
A graduate of Huntsville High School, Dr. Davis did her graduate research work in mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She also has degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Auburn University in biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering, respectively.
Dr. Davis is a member of Monte Sano United Methodist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, where she was a member of the Building Committee and chaired the Missions Committee. She also attends Huntsville First United Methodist Church and is an active member of the Alabama Emmaus Community. In 2015, she served on Bishop Wallace-Padgett’s Think Tank for the North Alabama Conference. She has served on several non-profit boards and makes presentations to young people to encourage them to enter Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields. Her husband is Alabama 23rd Judicial Circuit District Judge Dick Richardson. They have two adult children.
