Joe Rush Center for Urban Ministry provides full-service mission camp opportunity for youth and college groups

1/17/2017

The Joe Rush Center for Urban Ministry, a United Methodist Advance Special in Birmingham, is scheduling mission weeks for youth and college groups for 2017. This full-service mission camp provides opportunities for middle school, high school, college-aged and older groups to experience inner-city ministry by painting houses for low-income homeowners (most of whom are elderly or disabled) throughout Jefferson County.

The Joe Rush Center provides all the paint supplies, leadership, bunk beds, hot showers, food, options for evening programs and/or fun outings, and flexibility to tailor the experience for your group!

Many groups spend a full week (Sunday night through Friday morning) in residence at Urban Ministry’s dorm facility located at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church in Midfield. Groups work during the day and reflect on their service in the evening. During the week groups have an opportunity to consider important issues from a Christian perspective such as poverty, racism and affordable housing.

The goal of the Joe Rush Camp is to strengthen relationships between volunteer groups and homeowners in the community over a can of paint and a paintbrush.

The Rush Center can accommodate groups up to 80 people. The work camp season is from March through October. The cost is $275/person for 5 days and 5 nights including room, board, daily mission activities, and evening programs. For every six youth who attend, an adult chaperone may attend free of charge. For day groups not staying in the dorms, a donation of $11/person will cover all painting materials and staff support. An extra $5/day will cover the cost of lunch.
