Director of Family Ministries


The Director of Family Ministries is charged with encouraging and empowering the Church to disciple our youngest members, from birth to 12th grade, with special emphasis on birth to 5th grade. The director is the supervisor for the Middle School and the High School directors and their ministries as well as the nursery, but the director’s primary responsibility is to nurture spiritual growth through programming, worship and service of children from birth to 5th grade. Additionally, the director will be responsible for equipping parents to engage their own children in their faith walk. Qualifications: • Degree in Christian Education, early childhood or elementary education, or commensurate degree. • Experience working with children in a professional setting • Demonstration of an understanding of children’s faith development • Has strong organizational, leadership, management and communication skills • Works independently as a self-starter and is highly motivated • Entrepreneurial spirit Responsibilities • Vision and vision casting for Children’s Ministry at Mountain Chapel UMC • Manage, equip, and inspire a Children’s Ministry team to reach the hearts of children • Create an inviting, engaging and safe environment on Sunday mornings by: o Overseeing volunteer recruitment and training o Evaluating and selecting curricula that promote key values such as biblical literacy, openness, compassion, and community. o Being present to welcome children and their families to MCUMC. o Welcoming newcomers to MCUMC and helping to connect to the Church. o Overseeing Nursery to ensure best practices are being followed. • Attending to children’s experiences in worship, including: o Advocating for participation in worship (prayers, serving Communion, etc.) o Creating intentional practices and tools for children to use during worship to enable them to engage whole heartedly in the work of worship o Celebrate special Sundays and mark spiritual milestones that are child-centered o Leading Children’s Moment (or training others to lead Children’s Moment effectively) o Train, schedule and equip 4th and 5th graders to serve as weekly acolytes. • Plan & execute kids’ programs in the life of the church: o Seasonal programs like the Easter Egg Hunt, Advent event o Summer programs like VBS, camps and other opportunities o Outreach events to open our doors to new families o Regular Sunday night programming • Participate as a church leader by: o Attending weekly staff meetings, semi regular worship planning and quarterly Leadership Council meetings. o Lead quarterly Children’s Ministry Team meetings • Supervise and manage Middle School and High School student ministries as well as nursery staff: o Weekly check-ins with Middle School and High School staff members for advocacy, resourcing, accountability and strategic planning o Promote communication between Middle School and High School ministries, including keeping a master calendar for Family Ministries that oversees birth to 12th graders and their families • Spiritual and Leadership Traits: o A person in this position must have a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. They must also possess a “servant’s heart,” the gift of hospitality and a desire to work with others. o A sincere love of children • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: o Computer skills (proficient in Word and Excel) o Experience with databases and websites, or willingness to learn. o Comfort with social media sites including Facebook and Instagram. o Ensure that the Safe Sanctuaries Policy is observed in all student ministry settings. o Knowledge of first aid. • Supervisory and Budget Responsibilities: o The Director of Family Ministries reports to the Senior Pastor. o The Director of Family Ministries supervises the Middle School Director and the High School Director, as well as the nursery staff. o The Director of Family Ministries is responsible for overseeing and working within the Family Ministries and the Children’s Ministries (birth to 5th grade ministries) budget. • Physical Requirements: o This position involves a wide range of physical activity including walking, bending, sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
