Director of High School Ministries

The position of Director of High School Ministries is responsible for building young disciples for Christ by developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to high school ministry (in the areas of relationships, worship, discipleship, mission, and outreach) while serving as a spiritual leader and role model. There shall be a comprehensive approach to the development and implementation of the High School ministry at all levels in the connectional system of the United Methodist Church and in all ministry areas of the local church. This comprehensive approach is based on the understanding of the primary task of high school ministry to: • Love high school students • Encourage students in developing their relationship with God • Provide them with opportunities for nurture and growth • Challenge them to respond to God’s call to serve in their communities and world. The position is exempt (salaried, not eligible for overtime) requiring an estimated 10 hours per week. CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND SKILLS • Coordinate Sunday School curriculum for high school students (grades 9-12) and recruit additional teachers, leaders and mentors. • Teach during the weekly Sunday evening high school sessions. • Coordinate and plan activities such as the Youth Beach Trip, Summer Mission Trip and other overnight events. • Help plan, develop, and implement all aspects of a balanced high school ministry in the areas of group building, worship, discipleship, mission, and outreach. • Mentor students in developing their leadership skills. • Be aware of resources for developing the ministry programming and participate in continuing education events and training opportunities. • The selection of theologically appropriate curriculum (in consultation with the Director of Family Ministries), and acquisition of all materials required by the curriculum. • Keep records of student participation and manage the high school ministry budget. • Effective and timely communication with students, parents, the Director of Family Ministries, church staff, and congregation. • Make yourself available to high school students in a variety of ways (i.e., lunch at school, attendance at extracurricular activities, visitation, times of crisis, etc.). • Develop and equip high school students to serve as mentors and leaders to the middle school students. • Develop relationships with other area UM student ministries. • Ensure that the Safe Sanctuaries Policy is observed in all student ministry settings. • Knowledge of first aid. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • Leadership skills • Caring and compassionate personality • College degree preferred • Background checks required. • Drug testing if/when required by church. • Be at least 23 years of age (Safe Sanctuary – minimum of 5 years older than oldest student) SPIRITUAL AND LEADERSHIP TRAITS A person in this position must have a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and a commitment to love one another other as God loves us. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Competent in basic biblical knowledge • Competent/clear communicator • Organized and responsible SUPERVISORY AND BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES • Invite (recruit), oversee and direct volunteers/mentors • Must be able to plan and effectively execute activities for students within an allotted annual budget. • Reports to the Director of Family Ministries PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position involves a wide range of physical activity including walking, bending, carrying moderate weight, sitting/standing for extended periods of time, and must be able to drive church vehicles. • Must be able to oversee and participate in a variety of activities with the students. • High energy level and ability to visit students.
