Day School Director


Purpose: The mission of Canterbury Day School is to provide loving care to each child, develop a solid foundation for their cognitive, physical, social/emotional, and spiritual development, and offer an age and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Requirements: The Director must have a sense of call and a passion for ministry with preschool age children and their families. This person should have significant experience in preschool education and ministry and possess good communication skills with both young children and adults. The Director should have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field (Master’s preferred) with demonstrated licensure or certification in early childhood education. Experience in leadership, administration, and staff guidance is required. The Director provides the supervision and maintenance of all aspects of the Day School program. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Staffing Responsibilities: • Recruit, interview, and hire high quality staff members. Provide orientation for new staff which includes reviewing job duties and responsibilities and Day School policies and procedures. • Observe teachers and assistant teachers on a regular basis and complete an annual evaluation of each staff member. • Maintain personnel files in accordance with Canterbury UMC Policies and Procedures. • Act as a resource person for teachers and assistant teachers and provide training and workshop opportunities for staff development. • Supervise staff conduct and carry out personnel policies. Evaluate the need for staff disciplinary action or dismissal when necessary. • Conduct monthly staff meetings. • Approve staff time off and arrange substitute teachers when necessary. • Ensure compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations regarding equal opportunity employment, Wage and Hour, etc. • Supervise and mentor Day School Assistant Director. Financial Responsibilities: • Maintain fiscal control of the Day School’s finances. • Monitor accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash flow. • Generate and implement a yearly budget. • Prepare biweekly payroll for submittal to the Finance Office. Parent/Child Responsibilities: • Recruit new families by conducting tours and providing information to prospective parents. • Conduct all registrations and process enrollment forms. Place children in the appropriate class. • Meet with parents who express a concern about their child. • Monitor communication between teachers and parents. General Responsibilities: • Establish all Day School policies and procedures, and communicate these to parents and staff. • Set the atmosphere and tone for the educational environment, including upholding the existing philosophies and high quality curriculum and classroom environments. Promote and support developmentally appropriate practices in the classrooms and advise teachers on such practices when necessary. • Determine the safety, maintenance, and security requirements for the Day School. • Conduct quarterly meetings with the Day School Advisory Council. Accountability: • Reports to Rev. Hill Carmichael. Hours/Vacation/Benefit Information: • Individual will work 40 hours per week. • Vacation - 2 weeks/year plus Day School holidays. Additional vacation time accrued with length of service in accordance with the Canterbury United Methodist Church Policies and Procedures Manual. • As a full-time employee, individual will have access to Canterbury’s benefits; salary will commensurate with education and experience.
