Financial Assistant (Full-Time/FTE)


OVERVIEW Responsible for supporting the work of the finance department at Canterbury United Methodist Church, according to the requirements of the Discipline of the United Methodist Church as well as the policies and direction set forth by the Church Council, Finance Committee, SPRT, and Board of Trustees. Reports directly to the director of finance at Canterbury United Methodist Church. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Follows sound and appropriate accounting and cash management practices defined by the Church Council, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees in the daily operations of the church’s Financial Office. The functions performed include, but may not be limited to, the following: - Receives money and makes deposits - Works with the bank if adjustments to deposits are needed - Ensures that all deposits are made to the church’s operating and special accounts • Works closely with the director of finance to - Process accounts payable, process online giving, general ledger, financial reporting, and account reconciliation. Perform all required data entry functions in the applicable financial tools - Process stock gifts, mutual fund gifts and IRA transactions - Assist in managing the human resources (HR) processes and policies of the church • Performs other duties as necessary and assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS • Prefer a college degree in Accounting, Business Administration and/or Human Resources Management. • Experience in accounting practices and procedures, budgeting, financial management, financial analysis, and forecasting are highly desirable. • Knowledge of the Discipline of the United Methodist Church and NAC Local Church Financial Handbook is a benefit, but not required. • Analytical skills and proven experience with automated accounting and financial tools such as Excel, QuickBooks, or other accounting systems, online banking and knowledge of payroll systems is desired but not required. • Strong communication skills and ability to manage a wide variety of situations with discretion, confidentiality, and a positive attitude are needed • Adherence to all Canterbury United Methodist Church employee and financial policies and guidelines is required. HOURS • This position is full-time (FTE) and averages 36 hours per week; M-TH (8 hours); Fridays (4 hours leave at 12noon).
