Director of Music and Worship


Purpose: To lead an effective and growing Music and Worship Ministry of FUMCT that includes ministries for children through adult ages so that it complements the liturgy and preaching, and enhances the spirit of the congregation.

Status: Full time, with benefits (health insurance, vacation, pension, continuing ed)

Supervised By: Senior Pastor

Education, Skills, and Desired Abilities: To be able to display a professional level of musical talent from training and experience in leading a large music ministry in a large church. A Masters degree in music is required from an accredited institution of higher learning; a Doctorate degree in music is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with 5 or more years experience in medium to large church music ministry positions. The Director of Music and Worship must also have a working knowledge of church music tradition and emerging sacred music trends, and must be able to communicate well and in a friendly manner with the pastors, worship and music committee members, fellow employees, church choirs, and members of the congregation.

Job Performance Requirements:
1. The director of music is a committed, energetic, passionate Christian whose main objective is to present the Word of God through music
2. Is directly responsible for the Traditional form of worship service and all of its components
3. Will plan and provide quality worship music for Sunday morning services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and other special services throughout the year while including the adult Chancel Choir, children and youth choirs, handbell choirs, solos, ensembles, instrumentalists and any other music requested by the Senior Pastor
4. Will take leadership in planning the corporate music for worship (i.e. hymns, congregational responses, liturgical music, communion ritual, children’s participation in worship services, etc.)
5. In coordination with the Pastoral Assistant, be responsible for the content of the Traditional worship bulletin each week and for special services which includes editorial responsibilities
6. Meet regularly with pastors and other worship staff to effectively plan worship series and special services throughout the year; attend and participate in weekly staff meetings
7. Be responsible for the planning of music for weddings and funerals
8. Plan programs, worship, and liturgy for special services in the liturgical calendar (i.e. Lessons and Carols, Easter, Good Friday, All Saints, etc.)
9. Supervise a staff of interns, section leaders, Handbell Director, Coordinator of Children’s Music, and Organist, and set a mission and vision for the overall Music and Worship Ministry that includes these staff members and their areas of leadership
10. Successfully recruiting year-round in all ensembles and ministry areas, including non-singers to help with other support services such as music library and robe maintenance
11. Be responsible for the Music Ministry Annual Budget
12. Be responsible for the purchase and maintenance of all musical instruments for the Music and Worship Ministry
13. Establish and maintain a strong presence in the greater music community of Tuscaloosa and in musical organizations (i.e. American Choral Directors Association, Choristers Guild, University of Alabama, Shelton State Community College, Stillman College, etc.)
14. Will have an on-going responsibility to develop new ensembles and worship ministries that include using more volunteers in helping to lead in worship Interested individuals should submit a current resume, contact information for three references, and a brief description of the importance of faith in an effective music and worship ministry.
