Description We all have ideas that we tell ourselves about God and how God works in our lives. This book is designed to help discover the narratives that Jesus lived by and to practice spiritual exercises that will foster growth in the knowledge of our good and beautiful God. At the end of each chapter opportunity is offered for engaging in spiritual practices that reinforce the biblical messages. Small group discussion questions also accompany each chapter. Those who are leading apprentice groups will also find additional help and opportunities to interact with other leaders at www.apprenticeofjesus.com.

Overall Review
The Good and Beautiful God is the first book of The Apprentice Series by James Bryan Smith. Each book of the series is based on four components that are essential to transformation. Throughout the series, readers are challenged to examine false narratives they've believed about God and replace those narratives with the God Jesus reveals in scripture. This transformation process happens best in the context of community, all under the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Good and Beautiful God focuses specifically on the character of God and how God works in our lives. More than an intellectual exercise, Smith includes Soul Training Exercises at the conclusion of each chapter. Some of the exercises are classical spiritual disciplines, while others offer fresh ways to grow in discipleship. This book works well in small group settings. If used in Sunday school, time constraints may limit the amount of discussion, but is nonetheless very effective for adults who desire a deeper walk with Christ. The appendix includes a small group discussion guide that walks leaders step-by-step through the small group process. The discussion questions are insightful and engaging. The author even includes an estimated length of time with each activity to assist in planning. I found this to be a valuable resource personally and recommend it often to individuals and groups who are craving a life of deeper discipleship with Christ.
