Mrs. Winnie Mae Crumpton Murphree


Mrs. Winnie Mae Crumpton Murphree of Wedowee, Alabama, died on Jan. 24, 2011, at the age of 100. She is the surviving spouse of Rev. Hobart Murphree. She herself served as a supply pastor for 13 years in North Alabama.

Mrs. Murphree is also the mother of North Alabama Conference retired elder Rev. Jon Tal Murphee and Mrs. Sarah Corson of SIFAT. She is survived by three additional sons, thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren.

Bishop Will Willimon says, “Winnie Mae Crumpton Murphree was a remarkable person. We celebrate her life and ministry. She was a pioneer in the faith in so many ways and we are grateful for her ministry among us! We are thankful she passed her gifts for ministry to so many in her family.”

The arrangements are as follows:

  • Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at the Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2011.
  • The funeral will be Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church of Wedowee, AL. Mrs. Murphree will lie in state one hour before the service at the church.
