Dr. Carolyn S. Pitts


Retired Elder Dr. Carolyn S. Pitts died Sept. 28, 2013.

The arrangements are as follows:

  • The visitation will be Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel (1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209).
  • The funeral will be Saturday October 5 at 11 a.m. at Birmingham First UMC with burial following at Elmwood Cemetery.

Rev. Pitts was ordained an elder in 1981. She served Birmingham First UMC (Associate); Edgemont UMC; Conference Council on Ministries (Associate); Central Decatur UMC (Associate); and Carpenter UMC. She retired in 1998. Rev. Pitts was passionate about community and inner-city ministry. While serving at Birmingham First UMC, she spearheaded an effort to open the Old Firehouse Men's Shelter (along with the Cooperative Downtown Minister's Association and the Baptist Woman's Missionary Union). After retirement she served as a retired associate minister at the Church of the Reconciler.
