Equality UMC starts first Celebrate Recovery ministry in Coosa County
4/15/2016
Celebrate Recovery, a program which provides peer group support to individuals in overcoming hurts, hang-ups and habits will begin at Equality United Methodist Church April 19. This ministry has proven highly successful in several churches in the North Alabama Conference, and this will be the first such program offered in Coosa County.

“Celebrate Recovery is a ministry of reaching out to some of God’s broken children and journeying with them toward healing and wholeness,” said Dr. Gene Lankford, pastor of Equality UMC. “Whether they are struggling with alcoholism or drug addiction or with anger, divorce, grief or depression, it is a ministry of helping people to find freedom from their hurts, hang-ups and habits,” he explained.

Confidentiality is a key element of the Celebrate Recovery meetings. The small groups allow participants a safe place to share their experiences with others who are dealing with similar issues, and who are pledged not to disclose what is discussed in the meetings. It is open to all who will make that commitment to each other. While it does not offer professional counseling or clinical advice, it provides structured steps toward recovery based on the Biblical principles of the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1-12.

“This program is not just for addicts,” Dr. Lankford pointed out, “In fact, the majority of participants are dealing with other life issues such as guilt, overeating, childhood abuse, or countless other trials and difficulties along life’s way. It is a Christ-centered recovery program that connects people to the source of all healing.”

Beginning on April 19 at 6 p.m, the sessions will be held each Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will begin with a meal. There is no charge but donations are accepted. The church is located at 281 Alabama Highway 259 in Equality, Alabama. For further information call 334-541-4201.
