GracePoint at Mt. Olive was born on September 28, 2014, as a church re-launch. The former Mt. Olive UMC had endured several rounds of body blows and was staggering, but not yet down for the count. There was still life flowing from this place; it just needed a fresh start.
Re-launched as a place where life and grace intersect, GracePoint is fast becoming a faith oasis for their community. Two worship experiences are offered each Sunday morning to help people engage Christ. GracePoint reaches out through The Nest (feeding and clothing the homeless of North Birmingham), a monthly food pantry, a short term youth mission trip to North Georgia (the first in many years), and is sending three missionaries on a medical mission trip to Honduras in November 2015. The congregation also provides support for the local community center and plan to begin mission work with the North Jefferson Women’s Center in January 2016.
One of the lenses through which GracePoint views their mission in their community is to connect with people and have fun doing it. Since the launch, the church has worked with Gardendale’s city wide Easter egg hunt for kids, hosted Trunk or Treat at Halloween, invited the community out free meals, events for the kids, and more. "All so we can say to our neighbors: we care about you."
Looking ahead, the congregation prays for continued growth as the church expands its reach into the lives of those around. They will be launching an online campus this spring, as well, to meet the needs of those who can’t attend a church on Sunday mornings. "We will seek every new opportunity to reach people with the Gospel of Christ."
