Cooperative Parish of 8 United Methodist Churches serving a 1,000 square mile area on Sand Mountain in Jackson and Dekalb Counties of Alabama. Founded in 1969, Upper Sand Mountain Parish has Emergency Services and Family Care Programs that serve approximately 5,000 families each year. Expenses that USMP tries to help those in need to meet are food, utilities, prescription assistance, medical costs, gasoline, etc. USMP accepts Mission Service Teams year round to help in providing minor home repair and weatherization, building of ramps for accessibility, operation of an industrial cannery, gardening and gleaning, summer day camp programs for area communities, etc. USMP also operates other ministries including the Heart and Hand Housing Program, Gardens of Plenty, Christmas Toy Stores, Back to School supplies, Back to School workbook expenses, and Manna on the Mountain Backpack Program, and H.O.P.E. Center Temporary Housing Shelter Program. Having experienced tornadoes in each of the last six years, including significant damage in the April 27, 2011, tornadoes, long term disaster recovery services are ongoing through USMP.
