Birmingham-Southern College has been named one of the 20 best-value colleges and universities in the United States by the 2019 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges, Fiske announced Tuesday, July 10.
Fiske focused on BSC’s strong academics, campus life, and its recent tuition reset, which gained national attention for responding to families’ concerns about skyrocketing and confusing college pricing.
“In an effort to be more transparent about out-of-pocket costs, this leading Deep South liberal arts college has reset tuition and fees back to 2002 levels – decreasing these costs by more than half,” the guide reads.
The Best Buys of 2019 are schools that offer “outstanding educational value as determined by academic quality in relation to the net cost of attendance,” the guide reports. The Best Buys are 10 private and 10 public colleges and universities, including such institutions as Rice University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Arizona, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“We are so thrilled to be recognized for our efforts to provide a personalized, private-school education – and all the benefits that come with it – at a clear and accessible price,” said BSC President Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith. “We’ve known for a long time that Birmingham-Southern is one of the best educational values in the country, and it’s great to be acknowledged as such.”
The guide also emphasizes BSC’s blend of academics, community service, and an active campus.
“Small classes, a caring faculty, and an expanding menu of academic offerings continue to draw attention to this close-knit liberal arts school,” the guide reads, continuing that BSC is a good choice for students who “want to spend four years preparing, maturing, and challenging their minds so that they can make a difference in the world.”
It praises the college’s unique January Exploration Term as well as new and traditionally strong majors and advising programs in medicine, law, health sciences, art, theatre, music, urban environmental studies, and media and film studies, and more.
The Fiske Guide, now in its 35th edition, was created by Edward B. Fiske, the longtime education editor for the New York Times, and lists 320 of the best colleges and universities with tips from current students and college search tools. It highlights the Best Buy schools in a special section within the book.
