For the past three years, the Office of Connectional Ministries and Leadership Development has successfully collaborated with the Districts in their investment toward increasing the participation of young people in the life of the North Alabama Annual Conference. This participation of young people in Annual Conference has facilitated the ability to grow young leaders in other areas of the Church. Additionally, we have seen more and more young people involving themselves in conference teams and committees, while they have learned about the polity and procedures of the United Methodist Church.
This year, the Office of Connectional Ministries and Leadership Development seeks to take an additional step further in discovering, developing, and deploying young leaders. Youth (ages 12-18) and young adults (ages 18-30) are invited to apply to be a Young People’s Ministries (YPM) Member of Annual Conference. This new application process is intended to better include youth and young adults who have sought to be a part of the Annual Conference, but did not know how to get connected in order to serve as a district youth member or district young adult member of Annual Conference.
Potential YPM Members should apply by October 31, 2018. Click here for the application.
Once the application closes, each district will be sent a list of applicants from within their district and two youth and two young adults will be chosen to represent each district as members of the 2019 North Alabama Annual Conference. Decisions will be announced by November 15, 2018.
In addition to the new application process, a greater level of commitment from youth and young adult members will be asked in 2019. In the past, district offices provided full scholarships for all participating youth and young adult members, which covered housing and meals. However, to increase their contribution and investment, each YPM Member will be asked to contribute $50 of their costs. YPM Members will be encouraged to find creative ways to raise these funds. However, YPM Members who cannot pay the $50 will not prohibited from participation.
This year, we are also initiating a new Page Program as a way that young people can be involved internally in the process of Annual Conference and to learn more about Church Leadership. Pages will have the opportunity to work alongside Annual Conference staff and volunteers and to learn more about how different elements of Annual Conference work, from worship and production to logistics and registration, and everything in between. Pages will also have the opportunity to participate in respective youth or young adults convocation experiences (with the exception of voting).
The Page Application will be an additional position someone applying for YPM Membership can consider and indicate his or her interest on the YPM Member application. (Click here for the application.) Those applying to be Pages should have completed tenth grade. The program is open to all young people up to graduating college seniors. Pages will be chosen by January 15, 2019, and notified by January 20, 2019.

It is our hope that these new initiatives will increase the diversity of participation, as well as the richness of the experience!
