Cameron UMC celebrates 125 years

September 18, 2009

Cameron United Methodist Church just concluded a month of celebration, marking 125 years of serving the Lord in northeast Madison County.

The celebration began with the annual homecoming celebration on August 9. During the 11 a.m. service many former members and friends joined the Cameron crowd for an inspiring worship service. The sanctuary was filled with memorabilia and photos from years past.

There was a displays of pictures of former pastors and folders with letters and reminiscences from their days at Cameron. Those who responded included Rev. Sammy Stabler from the 1940’s; Rev. J. W. “Vic” Vickers who served from the late 1950’s to early 1960’s; J. B. Pendergraft and Robert F. Nance from the 1970’s; Emory Burton and Edward Soule from the 1980’s; Larry Millard from the 1990’s; Bill Stone whose ministry extended from the mid-1990’s through the mid-2000’s; and Edward Soule from 2005-present. Also family members of two deceased former pastors—Clarence Davis and Bill Levie—provided their remembrances as well.

The service contained special musical selections and a storyteller who took the historical information and shared it in an informal manner. The present pastor, Dr. Edward Soule, preached on “Here I Raise My Ebenezer”, asking whether we are erecting a gravestone, a boundary stone, or a milestone in this place.

That was followed by “dinner on the ground” out in the church yard. Tents and trees provided some shade on an afternoon in the mid-90 degree Alabama sun. But the food and fun kept everyone happy. Bound updated brief histories of the church were distributed along with old fashioned fans with the church picture on them compliments of a couple in the church.

The day ended with a musical celebration back in the sanctuary. Guest singers provided special music, then the congregation joined in singing hymns together. There was one hymn from each of the decades of the church’s existence 1880’s-2000’s.

The celebration continued the following week with the annual revival. A different former pastor spoke each night of the revival. Rev. Bill Stone preached on Sunday night, August 16. Rev. J. W. “Vic” Vickers preached on Monday night, August 17. And Rev. Larry Millard preached on Tuesday, August 18. Special music was presented each night. A fellowship time capped off the Tuesday night service. That night there were three pastors present Larry Millard, Bill Stone and Edward Soule who served Cameron successively from 1990 to 2009.

Other special services during August included visits from two missionaries to China: Daniel Sims and Brian Coffman, a member of Cameron who grew up in this church. Rev. Marjorie Palmer, recently retired pastor preach the last Sunday of August.
