Bishop Willimon to preach 4-part series on ‘Day 1’

Bishop of North Alabama United Methodist Conference to address “Why Jesus?”

The Rev. Dr. William H. Willimon, bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, based in Birmingham, is the featured speaker for a four-part series airing October 3, 10, 17 and 24 on “Day 1,” the nationally syndicated radio program also accessible by podcast at Each program includes a sermon by Willimon along with interviews conducted by Peter Wallace, executive producer and host.

Willimon’s series, entitled “Why Jesus?” is based on his new book by the same title published this fall by Abingdon Press. “Why Jesus? Because he is the most fascinating person in the world,” Willimon says.

In the four-week series Willimon explores Jesus the Vagabond, Jesus the Storyteller, Jesus the Magician, and Jesus the Home-wrecker.

“All the gospels present Jesus on a continual road trip—God in motion, urgently making a way to us in defeat of the desert in which we wander,” Willimon says in the first sermon. “Some of Jesus’ best words were spoken on the run. If you want to know about Jesus, if you want to know him, you’ve got to meet him on the road.”

Willimon has served as bishop of the North Alabama conference since 2004, after teaching for 20 years at Duke University and Duke Divinity School in Durham, N.C. A graduate of Wofford College, Yale Divinity School, and Emory University, he earlier was pastor of churches in Georgia and South Carolina. The author of more than 60 books, he writes and lectures extensively on the subject of preaching and the church.

Formerly known as “The Protestant Hour,” “Day 1” celebrates 65 years of weekly broadcast in 2010. Distributed to 200 radio stations across America and overseas, it is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media in association with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church. The program has received numerous awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award and the Communicators’ Award for Excellence in inspirational radio.
