Gilbert Hanke, General Secretary for the Commission on United Methodist Men is scheduled to visit North Alabama as the primary presenter for "You and Jesus: Awakening Men to Christian Discipleship." This men's event is hosted by the Southeast District and Tommy Spraggins is chairperson of the team asked to organize the event.
Hanke is a well regarded practitioner of the Christian Faith. In 2010, he was 1 of 11 United Methodists nominated as United Methodist of the Year.
"Hanke was nominated for his mission work in the U.S. and abroad. Putting his professional skills in speech pathology to work, Hanke has led 18 mission trips to Haiti, eight trips to Costa Rica and one trip to Tomsk, Siberia, to help children with hearing impairments and other handicaps.
Hanke also traveled to Haiti in January 2010 as part of a mission team rebuilding a school in Mellier.
As general secretary, Mr. Hanke worked with the North Carolina Bible Outreach program to introduce DISCIPLE Bible study in male prisons within five states, and partnered with Stop Hunger Now in an effort to provide emergency rations all around the globe. At the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Fort Hill, Va., he promoted the Nothing But Nets program and passed out New Testaments to the 5,000 scouts attending a worship service" (UMM News).
The purpose of the "You and Jesus" event is to discover how to get:
- More men in Church
- More men meeting for study, fellowship, and service on a monthly basis
- More males accepting Jesus
- More UMM charter groups and more men in children’s and youth
You & Jesus: “Awakening Men to Christian Discipleship” will be held on March 26, 2011 from 9:00 AM - Noon. Location of event is the Arbor at 1st United Methodist in Alexander City. Cost is FREE but participants are asked to register. T-shirts are available for $10.00 each.
