Disaster Response Update - What You Can Do

4/29/2011

This is just a glimpse of what we are experiencing all over the state. This is an area of Pleasant Grove, and a small look at the utter devastation there.

It has been a long 2 1/2 days for many of us. First, I want to dispel the myth that the Methodist church has been slow to respond to this disaster. From the moment the storms left, United Methodist Churches around this conference have reached out to their communities to be a part of the recovery. Tuscaloosa First started a feeding program and housing volunteers, Good Shepard in the Northeast District opened it doors to those without a home with the Red Cross, and Arab First immediately was a witness for Christ.

This is a very small sample of the overall response. As United Methodists, since the moment the tornadoes hit, we have helped and saved many, many lives.

We are now becoming organized enough to start mobilizing Emergency Response Trained [ERT] teams, and many of them will be on the ground by tomorrow morning. Trinity UMC, Birmingham, is sending a team to Pleasant Grove and we have help from outside of the conference going to Dadeville. Other teams will be deployed this weekend to various areas and we will be training individuals this weekend to help. These trainings are full, and we are working on scheduling more. Please check the conference website for more trainings next week. Currently in every district, volunteers have been mobilized in some form or fashion. We are there, as United Methodists, being the body of Christ.

For those who are frustrated by the need for ERT training, I understand that in a disaster of this magnitude, we just want to go and help. I want to make clear that there are other organizations who are calling for volunteers. If you feel called to serve with those organizations, and are invited, our blessings go with you. However, if you want to serve during this phase of the response, under the direction of the United Methodist Church, this is the channel through which you do that. I believe ERT makes us the best volunteer we can be: skill, safety, pastoral care.

I again, urge folks to not go into heavily devastated areas on their own. It is unsafe, as you can see from the picture above.

At this time we have a better assessment of supplies which are needed. Below is a list and churches which are serving as staging areas to collect those supplies. Please call ahead, if you can, before you deliver anything, as supply needs will rapidly change. If you see an error on this list, please email mlacey@northalabamaumc.org

Conference wide needs:

  • Tarps
  • UMCOR health kits
  • First Aid kits
  • non-perishable food items
  • diapers
  • bottle water (in some areas, we are currently getting a lot of water trucked in).
  • gas-powered generators

Please be patient and respectful of the following contact numbers below. We are dealing with a lot of communication issues and questions.
