Southeast District announces new District Lay Leader Bob Neighbors

The Southeast District announces Dr. Bob Neighbors is the new District Lay Leader. He takes over from Mr. Steve Lyles who became the North Alabama Conference Lay Leader during the 2011 Annual Conference earlier this month.

As one of Steve Lyles’ first official acts as Conference Lay Leader, he pinned the Lay Leadership pin on Bob Neighbors during worship at Equality United Methodist Church, Neighbors home church. Pastor John Wilson and the congregation looked on in support.

District Superintendent Richard Stryker welcomed Bob to this new responsibility and expressed affirmation in their working together in “this joint ministry of laity and clergy.”

Rev. Stryker also presented the Equality UMC congregation with a certificate in appreciation of their paying 100% of their 2010 Conference budget askings.

As the newest member of the Lay Ministry Team, Bob Neighbors joins Steve Lyles and the seven other District Lay Leaders in the North Alabama Conference.

Neighbors is a member of Equality UMC and serves on the Church Council, and the Finance Committee. He is Chair of the PPR Committee, teaches Sunday school teacher and sings in the choir. He also serves as Equality’s lay member to the Annual Conference. He is a certified Lay Speaker and is on the Southeast District Board of Church Location and Building.

Neighbors has 41 years of service in Public Education in the state of Alabama - 22 years of that time he served as Superintendent of Education. He retired in 2003 as Superintendent of Education for the Jefferson County School System. He received BS, Master of Education, and Doctor of Education degrees from Auburn University. His dissertation was on local school finance in Alabama.
