Bishop William H. Willimon has announced the appointment of Dr. Rick Owen as Senior Pastor of Trinity UMC in Huntsville effective June 2012. Rick is currently serving as the Director of Strategic Ministry with Resource Ministry Partners.
Rick has served as a United Methodist pastor in the North Alabama Conference in churches from 15 members to 4,500 members. He is an experienced teacher serving with the School of Christian Missions in seven United Methodist conferences as well as resourcing churches throughout the annual conference when he served on the North Alabama Conference Connectional Ministries staff.
In announcing this appointment, Bishop Willimon stated, “After leading some of our great congregations, Rick was tapped by Charlie Carlton and the United Methodist Foundation to help develop their Stewardship and Leadership Resources program. Rick traveled throughout the Southeastern Jurisdiction of Methodism and throughout the country helping churches gear up their mission while making stewardship and leadership a top priority. Rick was also selected to be Chair of our Board of Ordained Ministry, making it a model in United Methodism of a productive, recruitment-oriented Board.”
Bishop Willimon also praised retiring Trinity UMC senior pastor, Charles Gattis saying, “In just a few years, Charles transformed Trinity from being our greatest connectional giving problem to our greatest stewardship success. I’ve asked Charles to speak at this year’s Annual Conference Memorial Service as one of our most widely respected pastors. By announcing his retirement this fall, Charles gave us the opportunity to transition pastors without losing any of the momentum that Charles has given to Trinity.”
Dale Cohen, District Superintendent of the Northeast District, said, “Rick Owen is the ideal choice for Trinity. We consulted with Dan Hotchkiss of the Alban Institute to assist in an assessment of Trinity’s current needs and in the development of a profile that would help us define the qualities and characteristics needed in the next Senior Pastor. In dialogue with the Cabinet and through subsequent consultation with Trinity’s Staff-Parish Relations Committee, it was agreed that Rick was the best choice for Trinity at this time.”
Dr. Rick Owen will begin his work at Trinity on June 13, 2012.
