North Alabama Conference Disaster Recovery Coordinator Rev. Nancy Cole announces that the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has awarded the Conference Disaster Recovery Team a supplemental grant for $500,000 to further support the recovery work the Conference is doing in response to the April 27, 2011, tornadoes.
Rev. Cole says, “This is exciting news! This grant will allow us to reach more families, provide limited case management, and do more work toward other designated unmet needs. UMCOR has been so supportive and available to us and willing to resource us in our recovery and rebuilding efforts. I am so appreciative.”
To date UMCOR has awarded the North Alabama Conference a total of $1.65 million for recovery work in response to the April 27 tornadoes.
Rev. Cole notes that while all the money will be used in the recovery effort, not all of it has been dispersed yet. This is mainly because the case management portion overseen by the federal government is just now getting off the ground with full steam. Case management is a key step in the long-term recovery process. However, Cole notes that the Conference has had a wonderful group of volunteers working in case management for the last several months. “They have been our lifeblood working with families for rebuilding to be possible.”
She adds, “I am so proud of our District Disaster Recovery Teams who have worked so hard and persevered for nearly a year. We are just so grateful for all the volunteers working in our Conference and all the money from UMCOR. Together we will continue reaching people and helping to rebuild lives.”
