Farmville students relish experiences of mission trip for disaster recovery

Jeff Postans and his team from Farmville Wesley Campus Ministry in Farmville, Virginia, served in the Mountain Lakes District, along with Rev. Marvin McCormick, Construction Coordinator for the North Alabama Conference Disaster Recovery Team. The students spent their spring break serving storm survivors in the Guntersville area. The following is his summary of the trip to Alabama.

Finding the right words to describe this mission are difficult. The ones that come to mind are powerful, joyous, spiritual, life changing, awesome and overwhelming. Reverend (Marvin) McCormick and all of the people from Henryville UMC were so hospitable and gracious we were blown away. The friendliness and caring of all of the people when we arrived, while we were there and even since we left has truly touched all members of our team.

Working on replacing a roof for a local family was a great experience. Of the 14 team members only the 4 adults had any roofing experience. At least 3 of the team members had a fear of heights. Well the Holy Spirit took care of all of that. The amount of work that was done was amazing. The case workers that we worked with, Lisa and Dorothy, were excellent. The family that we came to serve served us even more.

Working with the Henryville UMC's Wednesday afterschool program was fantastic. All members of our team fell in love with the children. This is an activity that should be supported more and more across United Methodist Churches.

We were concerned with a couple of our students though that they may sneak off and try to return to Guntersville after we left. That is how much they fell in love with the place and the people. Like I mentioned earlier we all experienced life changing events while on the mission. I do know that several students found a deeper relationship with Christ while on this mission.

If you get a chance, please check out the Wesley Foundation's website. On the missions updates you should see the emails that I wrote while down there to let people know how the mission was going.

We came to serve and we got served and ministered to by the people at Henryville UMC and the City of Guntersville.

We are in the process of planning to hopefully return to this area this summer for more mission work. We lift up the people in Northern Alabama in our prayers.
