The Capstone UMC celebrates official launch

On Sunday, September 9, 2012, The Capstone UMC, one of North Alabama’s newest congregations, will celebrate its Launch Sunday. However, the celebration has already started as The Capstone’s launch team hosted a “Grand Opening” party on Wednesday, Sept. 5.2012, at Midtown Village mall in Tuscaloosa.

The two hour Launch Celebration was an open-to-the-public party held on the grassy area of the outdoor shopping mall. The evening featured snow cones, games, inflatables for children, giveaways, and information about the church.  Tuscaloosa’s newest Christian radio station Revocation Radio helped sponsor the event. The Launch Celebration started with ribbon cutting by the Tuscaloosa Chamber of Commerce.

Rev. Wade Langer is pastor of Capstone UMC.

As members of the congregation gathered for prayer before the ribbon cutting, Rev. Langer shared with the group that soon after he moved to Tuscaloosa he was invited to be part of a Bible study.  His first night attending, the group studied the call of Abraham found in Genesis 12. The verses about being “blessed to be a blessing” resonated with him. It helped mold a hope for the new church – being a congregation in ministry to bless and give to the community.

Indeed, that spirit of serving the community has been in the DNA of the new church start from the beginning. Langer was appointed to start the church in June of 2011 – just two months after tornadoes devastated the Tuscaloosa area.   As the church’s website explains Langer and the congregation “work closely with civic and religious organizations to rebuild neighborhoods, enrich the educational system, and transform the community.”

Earlier this year, the congregation began monthly worship services on April 29, 2012-- the first Sunday after the anniversary of the 2011 tornadoes. The Sept. 9, 2012, Launch Sunday marks the beginning of weekly worship services and a full line-up of ministries.  The church will worship each week at 10:30 a.m. at the Belk Activity Center at Bowers Park (2101 Bowers Park Drive, Tuscaloosa, AL 35405).

As the official launch nears, Rev. Langer notes that the congregation has a strong group of leaders.  “We have a great core group.  For a ‘parachute drop’ church start, that is half the battle. Getting together the right core group was important.  That is why we are launching one year after I was appointed.“

This Sunday’s launch worship service will kick off a new series called "Relevant."   This series will ask the question "Is the Bible relevant today?" and "What do modern, thinking people do with the scriptures in 2012?"
