North Alabama Conference Historical Society Spring Meeting to highlight missions

The 2013 spring meeting of the North Alabama Conference Historical Society will be held at Blountsville UMC on March 9, 2013.  It will feature three presentations focusing on missions.

  • Paulette West, the Executive Director of United Methodist Volunteers in Mission for the Southeastern Jurisdiction, (UMVIM, SEJ) will present a paper related to the history of Volunteers in Mission in the Southeast and North Alabama Conference. She plans to recognize several leaders of UMVIM teams from across North Alabama.
  • Rev. George Cobb, a former missionary serving in the RedBird Missionary Conference in Kentucky will present a paper entitled, "Whom Shall I Send?." The paper will highlight missionaries who have served or continue to serve from the North Alabama Conference. During his presentation, Rev. Cobb will  cover the various categories of missionary service.  Several retired missionaries will also be present and recognized during the meeting.

  • A shorter paper by Dan Fulenwider will give the history of Blountsville United Methodist Church. Bear-meat Cabin in Blountsville was the site of Ebenezer Hearn's first sermon south of the Tennessee River when he was sent out in mission in 1818 to the territory opened by the August 9, 1814 treaty with the Creek Indians. It was in Blountsville that he arranged for another service a month later and the area became one of his regular preaching places.  Fulenwider will tell the story of Blontsville UMC from that day until the present.

Members of Blontsville UMC will prepare refreshments and a meal for the meeting.

The meeting starts at 9 a.m. The cost is $10 per person.
