The Otterbein University Concert Choir from Westerville, Ohio, will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Saint Mark United Methodist Church (2901 Columbiana Rd., Vestavia Hills, Alabama 35216). The performance is part of the Choir’s annual tour. Students will tour from March 15-22. The tour will include performances in Louisville, KY.; Birmingham, AL; New Orleans, LA.; Baton Rouge, LA; Memphis, TN.; Nashville, TN; Cincinnati, OH and Westerville, Ohio.
The program will include works by Bach, Weelkes, Gjeilo, and Hogan, as well as arrangements of gospel music and Creole folk songs from Louisiana. All performances are free and open to the public.
The Concert Choir is the most select of Otterbein University’s seven vocal ensembles. Most of its 50 members are Music majors who study voice privately. The Concert Choir tours annually to destinations both domestic and abroad. Recent itineraries have included Philadelphia in 2012; China in 2011; Charleston in 2010; Chicago in 2009; and France and Switzerland in 2006. The choir has performed at prestigious locations such as the Beijing Conservatory of Music, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and St. Nicholas Church in Prague. The ensemble frequently performs at professional conferences, including conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and the Ohio Music Educators Association.
Conductor Gayle Walker is in her thirteenth year as Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music at Otterbein University. She conducts the Concert Choir and Opus One vocal jazz ensemble and teaches conducting and early music history. Dr. Walker is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician, and is a recent past President of the Ohio Choral Directors Association. She has performed as a guest conductor or recitalist in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. A native of Iowa, Dr. Walker holds degrees from The University of Northern Colorado, The University of Colorado-Boulder and Macalester College.
