On Monday, May 20, 2013, the Seventh Annual Sumatanga Golf Tournament will be at Grayson Valley Country Club.
The annual event was started by members of Trussville First UMC, but has grown each year. Organizers now are actively seeking to partner with United Methodists across North Alabama to continue the event’s growth and vital support for Sumatanga.
Over the years, proceeds from the tournament have gone to support specific repairs and improvements to the camp facilities, and each year a donation is made to the Happy Camper Scholarship fund.
Bill Noland explains, that he and other members of the Sumatanga Golf Committee work with Sumatanga’s Executive Director Matt Johnson to identify which projects need funding.
One way individuals, groups and businesses can support this fundraiser is through Hole Sponsorships. A Hole Sponsorship is a minimum donation of $100. With a sponsorship your name and slogan will appear on a sign at a certain tee box, as well as on a large sign at the club house. Forms and checks must be received by Friday, May 10.
Another way to support the event is by being part of a team of golfers who participate in the tournament. Registration is limed to the first 100 paid golfers.
Noland reports that participation in the tournament has grown and sells out each year. So now organizers hope for even more sponsors and corporate partners to keep the event growing.
Noland explains one added benefit that has grown over the years as more people take part in the event is the fellowship and connection built between participants. People who are members of different churches get an opportunity to know each other. He says these United Methodists and others who love camp begin to build friendships on the golf course.
