Seventh Annual Sumatanga Golf Tournament raises $20,000 for camp

On Monday, May 20, 2013, the Seventh Annual Sumatanga Golf Tournament was held at the Grayson Valley Country Club.

Thanks to an early sell out and the beautiful weather, approximately $20,900 was raised to support Camp Sumatanga's summer camping ministries. This money will benefit the entire children’s ministry of Sumatanga as well as provide Happy Camper scholarships for children from local inner city neighborhoods that otherwise wouldn't be able to have a summer camp experience.

The annual Golf Tournament was started by members of Trussville First UMC, but has grown each year. This year’s sponsors included not only the Trussville First UMC Men’s Group, but also McDonald's, Boyd Bros Transportation and Bryant Bank. Special thanks also go to Don & Kelley Neal for their contribution.

Bill Noland, one of the organizers of the event, explains that one added benefit over the years as more people take part in the tournament is the fellowship and connection built between participants.  People who are members of different churches have an opportunity to get to know each other.  He says these United Methodists and others who love camp begin to build friendships on the golf course and in turn help Camp Sumatanga in their life transforming summer camp ministry.
