2013 Appointment-Making Process in North Alabama

2/1/2013

Dear Friends,

A few months ago I spent a long July afternoon at Lake Junaluska along with 12 other newly elected and continuing bishops waiting to hear where we would be assigned to serve from 2012-2016. I knew many of the people on the Jurisdictional Episcopacy Committee and had confidence that they would do their work with integrity and effectiveness. Nevertheless, I felt a measure of anxiety as I awaited the announcement of my assignment. After all, important aspects of my future rested in their hands.

That recent memory is a reminder to me of how the appointment season in the United Methodist Church brings a certain level of anxiety for clergy and churches anticipating a pastoral change. There is no way around this because appointments have a deep and far-reaching impact upon all involved. However, I have discovered that the anxiety is lowered as the principles behind the appointment-making process are clearly communicated.

This is one of the reasons that we are having Pastor/Staff Parish Relations Committee orientations in each District during February. In addition to discussing the general function of the Committees, we will talk about the principles that the 2013 Appointive Cabinet will use in appointment-making. Participants will also receive specific dates for Spring Appointive Cabinet meetings as well as our process for the announcement of appointments.

Please be in prayer that the Appointive Cabinet and I will discern clearly God’s direction as we make appointments for the new Conference year in North Alabama.  I look forward to seeing our clergy and Pastor/Staff Parish Relations Committees at the upcoming orientations.
