Thank you for your patience, prayers and cooperation during this appointment-making season

4/11/2013

Dear Friends,

Yesterday evening the Appointive Cabinet finalized full-time appointments for the 2013-2014 Conference year.  Of course, there is always the possibility of an unexpected appointment matter that requires our attention.  But for now, we have finished the assignment portion of our appointment-making process.

At the end of this long, but good process, I am feeling very thankful for the high quality of the District Superintendents in North Alabama. They are both candid and caring in the way in which they represent the Churches and Clergy of the Annual Conference.  Every Pastor and Church experiencing a move this year can be certain that their appointment was surrounded with lots of prayer and intentionality.  The needs of individual local Churches and Pastors, as well as the Annual Conference as a whole, were carefully considered during this process.

My hat is off to the Clergy and Churches in the Annual Conference for honoring the process that was set forth at the District Staff-Parish Relations Committee Orientations in February.  I have been impressed with the way North Alabama United Methodists have respected confidentiality, avoided kitchen cabinet conversations and trusted the Appointive Cabinet with the needed space and time to complete our appointment-making process.

Here are the remaining pieces to the process:

  • Each moving Pastor will be notified by their District Superintendent of their new appointment on Thursday, April 11.  Clergy (and spouses) are asked to keep this confidential until it is announced by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee chairs on Sunday, April 14 following the last morning worship service.
  • Each Staff-Parish Relations Committee chair receiving a new Pastor will be notified by their District Superintendent on Friday, April 12.  (Chairs and Staff Parish-Relations Committees are asked to keep this confidential until it is announced on Sunday, April 14 following the last morning worship service).

  • All changes in North Alabama full-time appointments will be announced on the Conference web-site on Sunday afternoon, April 14.  Part-time appointments will be announced in May.
  • The District Superintendent will host an introductory meeting with the moving Pastor and receiving Staff-Parish Relations Committee sometime between April 15 and April 29.

  • All moving Pastors will meet with the Appointive Cabinet for a day at Camp Sumatanga on April 23.
  • District Superintendents will work with each moving Pastor and receiving Church on transition matters for several months beginning on April 15.

  • Moving day is Wednesday, June 12.

  • Moving Pastors' first Sunday in their new appointment will be June 16.

Again, thank you for your patience, prayers and cooperation during this appointment-making season.  Your actions have played an important part in the outcome of these months of Appointive Cabinet discernment and work.

As always, it is a joy to serve as your bishop.

Blessings,

Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett
