West Virginia

There was a serious chemical leak which has affected nine counties in the West Virginia Conference.  Bishop Wallace-Padgett was contacted by Bishop Sandra L. Steiner Ball with the following plea for assistance.

Contact the Disaster Warehouse in Decatur (256-341-9961) or the North Alabama Conference Disaster Response office (205-226-7980)  for more information.

Opportunities to help in West Virginia

What I've learned today is that premade baby formula (brands  like Similac and Enfamil) is a big need.  West Virginia VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Assisting in Disasters) has largely concentrated on Charleston and is starting to move out more to the other counties, so paper products, baby wipes, distilled water are still needed.  Cash donations are needed also to deal with the long-term fall out.  It is anticipated that families living on the financial edge have used a lot of valuable personal resources on purchasing water and containers and special products like baby wipes, disposable diapers, etc.  Also, bread winners earning minimum wages have been out of work over the weekend and possibly longer.  We are preparing for an increased demand for food, food vouchers, and emergency utility and rent assistance as we move forward and water is restored.

Financial Contributions can be made to VOAD through the United Methodist Foundation of West Virginia, P.O. Box 3811 Charleston, WV  25338-3811 Online contributions may also be made at umfwv.org - donors should go to http://umfwv.org/ways-give, click the “online portal” link select “other” and designate the gift for #WV VOAD

Of course contributions can be made directly through the West Virginia Conference 900 Washington St. E, Charleston, WV 25301 mark disaster Relief.

Water seems to be coming in at a pace that is keeping up with the need. I hope that continues until the water is safe. The contamination levels have dropped - but it will still be a big job and take time to systematically flush lines to the many areas affected.

Our office of communications and our Coordinators are helping to direct donations to the proper locations and hooking up persons looking to donate needs with the proper contact persons.
