As a member or alternate member of Annual Conference, you will receive an e-devotional once a week until Annual Conference 2014 begins. Please use these meditations, based on the theme for this year, to prepare for our worshipful work together.
So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. –1 Corinthians 3:7 (NRSV)
Good dirt has a specific smell. If the content is right, moisture sufficient and preparation thorough, good dirt smells of potential, of rebirth, of new life. I'm sure mom didn't ponder this while scrubbing my stained jeans worn while I "helped" with the garden. Truth be told, I played with earthworms far more than I cultivated. Just the same, the memory of good dirt remains.
Last year, our annual conference began to prepare the soil for new ministries and new life. Side by side, we got our hands dirty, tilled the soil, appreciated what has been, but prepared for what will be.
Preparation is a patient, invaluable struggle of examination.
This year, we plant and raise those dirt-stained hands to God in prayerful expectation of the growth to come.
Creator God, we come to you on bended knees, sifting the soil and tending the garden in its fresh and tender readiness. Bless, we pray, this planting season that the seeds may be many and the hands that plant them eager. Amen.
