Opportunity for Spiritual Formation and Growth: Metagem Institute's Spiritual Direction Training Program
A two-year certification program for the formation of spiritual directors in the Christian tradition and for our time.
Those who have discerned a sense of call to offer spiritual direction or spiritual companionship are invited to apply. This program is open to laity and clergy.
2019-2021 Cohort starts coursework in March 2019 with the first intensive May 2019 and program completion in Feb 2021.
Distance learning and 6 on-site intensives in various locations.
This two year certification program for the formation of Spiritual Directors in the Christian tradition and for our time includes six on-site intensives, evaluated assignments to facilitate distance learning, and regularly recurring peer group check-ins via Zoom, Skype, or similar means.
Each 2.5 day intensive starts Thursday morning and concludes mid-day Saturday. The six on-site intensive are:
- May 16-18, 2019: Integrative Practices Part I
- Oct 17-19, 2019: The Practice of Spiritual Direction Part I
- Feb 20-22, 2020: Co-Creativity with God
- May 2020: Integrative Practices Part II
- Oct 2020: The Practice of Spiritual Direction Part II
- Feb 2021: Sacred Story
The location of these intensives may vary, but will be in one of the following: the Greater Huntsville Area, the Greater Birmingham Area, Sewanee, TN, or at Camp McDowell in Nauvoo, AL. All specific locations and dates will be posted as the 2019-2021 Cohort plans are confirmed.
In addition to the intensive themes listed above, the formation program will include the threaded topics of Dreamwork

, Integral Theory
, and Know Thyself
Upon completion of the requirements of this program a certificate of completion will be awarded. The certificate will attest to the recipient’s:
- practice of the ministry of spiritual direction, and
- completion of the formation and training program to develop the gifts and artistry of spiritual direction.
Tuition of $1900 covers the intensive programs, mentoring, assignment feedback, and processing fees.
The four tuition payments of $475 are due on the following dates: March 15, 2019, Sept 15, 2019, March 15, 2020, and Sept 15, 2020.

Books, videos, inventory instruments, internet access, etc.

The Metagem Institute
, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was founded by the Rev. Mary Catherine Akamatsu, associate rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville; her husband Jeff; the Rev. Monica Carlson, rector of Epiphany in Leeds; and the Rev. Kammy Young, a member of the faculty of the School of Theology, University of the South, in Sewanee, TN. Its mission is “to teach spiritual and integrative practices that all may be transformed into our risen life in Christ.” The word metagem represents such transformation; “meta” denotes a change and “gem” signifies our precious life in Christ.
