Alabama Course of Study Extension School Announces a Position Opening for Director of the Alabama Course of Study Extension School

The Alabama Course of Study Extension School (ALCOS) is part of a network of regional, extension, and satellite schools designed to provide vital education to part-time local pastors of The United Methodist Church in the North Alabama and Alabama-West Florida conferences.

Defined by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), the Course of Study is a 20-course curriculum that covers the study of Bible, Theology and Church History, Congregational Formation, and Clergy Formation.

As an extension of the Emory Regional Course of Study School, the ALCOS is directly related to additional extension schools in Mississippi and Tennessee-Kentucky, and a satellite program in Florida.

The director is supported by a board of managers consisting of representatives from both annual conferences, but is directly accountable to the director of the regional school, the Council of Regional Directors, and the Division of Ministry of the GBHEM.

This is a part-time, exempt position, currently supported by two additional specialized part-time staff. Compensation is negotiable, depending on qualifications. Lay as well as clergy are invited to apply.

Job Description

As defined by the Policies and Guidelines of the Course of Study (pp.13-14), the Director of the Extension School shall be responsible for the oversight, governance, and development of an extension school for part-time local pastors in accordance with the administrative policies of the GBHEM. To that end, the director is responsible for:

  1. Registering or overseeing the registration of students, maintaining student and faculty records, reporting grades to the regional director, the Division on Ministry, and reporting student assessments to the appropriate boards of ordained ministry as required;
  2. Assuming administrative responsibility for establishing a budget, raising funds, caring for expenses and insurance, and for ensuring an annual auditing process and submitting it to the regional director;
  3. Selecting and evaluating faculty for the extension school in consultation with the regional director;
  4. Developing a collegial community between students and faculty in the school;
  5. Give attention to the spiritual life and formation of the COS community;
  6. Drafting and submitting annual reports to the Division on Ministry in accordance with
  7. their policies and procedures;
  8. Serving as a liaison with both their regional schools and host institutions;
  9. Convening an annual meeting of the extension school’s board of managers;
  10. Ensuring compliance with the administrative policies of the GBHEM and regional school.

Job Qualifications

The director of the ALCOS must be a lay or clergy member of The United Methodist Church.

Completion of the Course of Study or a Masters of Divinity is encouraged.

The director must be a positive person with strong relational skills, able to connect with diverse people, including students and faculty, people from both annual conferences served by the ALCOS, the network of COS colleagues in the regional school, and the staff of GBHEM.

Given the possible changes in the denomination and annual conferences, this person must also be a good strategic thinker who is able to lead others toward a refined vision of what the ALCOS can become, as well as implement decisions made by GBHEM, the regional school and board of managers in response to changing denominational structures and contexts.

The director must be a great communicator in both written and spoken word and adept on the computer (e.g. Microsoft Office) and social media, including formats such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

A knowledge of adult learning theory, different learning styles, and effective pedagogy will be extremely helpful.

Ability to travel is required. Travel is however quite predictable for sessions of the COS, and meetings in Nashville, Atlanta, and occasionally other schools.
