Missions Monday: Pleasant Hill UMC’s story

8/19/2019

During worship on August 11, Pleasant Hill UMC (South Central District) had a blessing of backpacks for students preparing for a new school year. The congregation also prayed for teachers, school employees and administrators.

During the children's moment, students were presented with a small rock that was marked with a cross and Joshua 1:9, a Bible verse that says, "I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” The students were encouraged to let the rock be a reminder throughout the school year that God is with them and the congregation is continually praying for them. The church shared pictures of this special moment on Facebook.

Additionally, the congregation's support of students included collecting school supplies for students in need and stocking the Junior Food Bank.

The Junior Food Bank is a year-round ministry that supports food-insecure students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade through a weekend backpack. The congregation collects food and hygiene items including new socks, new underwear, toothpaste, shampoo, bar soap, sanitary napkins, deodorant, hairbrushes/combs/picks, juice packs, peanut butter crackers, cheese crackers, ritz crackers, mini cereal boxes, and fruit cups.

Bicentennial Celebration of Missions

For more than 200 years, Methodists from all continents have engaged in mission work that has transformed the world through the “work of justice, alleviate suffering; build peace; heal the sick; empower women; train leaders; and witness to the kingdom of God.” This year’s bicentennial celebration recognizes the mission work that has been done over the years.

The North Alabama Conference is celebrating the mission work of our congregations and organizations. You are invited to share your mission stories through an article or a short video. Send your congregation's stories to akufarimai@umcna.org.
