If You Liked “The Office,” You’ll Love “The Committee”

Utilizing its popular character from the “Chuck Knows Church” video series, Discipleship Ministries released a series of sixteen videos, “The Committee.” The videos focus on the fictitious Park Grove Community Church, which is without a pastor and contemplating closure. Mixing “Office-like” humor and familiar traits of many of our United Methodist churches and leadership teams, each episode lasts about 15 minutes and follows meetings of the committee as our hero, Chuck, helps them process their church’s purpose and future.

Topics covered in the series include:

  • Hospitality
  • Reflecting the Community
  • Evangelism
  • Discipleship Systems
  • Innovation
  • Small Groups
  • Children in Church
  • Stewardship
  • Committees That Work
  • Young Leaders
The free video series is offered here, or you may enroll in the course offered by Discipleship Ministries here. Enrolling in the course grants access to study guides, small group facilitation aids and additional videos on each topic entitled, “SUB-Committees.” Individuals and groups will also have the opportunity to engage and interact with other participants online through the course.

I was not initially enthusiastic about the series, as I had found the “Chuck Knows Church” series to be a bit silly although informative. I enjoyed watching “The Committee” and asked one of our leadership teams to offer their impressions of one of the episodes:

  • Relatable
  • Perspectives within the church well represented
  • Great on generational differences
  • Physicality is engaging
  • Symbolism is good
  • It’s free
  • Doesn’t use prescribed answers
  • Great way to begin a conversation
  • Individual videos are not stand-alone. I didn’t get all the jokes and references
  • Kind of hokey
  • Not as good as “The Office”
  • Too long, would require a long meeting to view/discuss
I encourage our churches to consider using the series as a way to diminish their feelings of isolation (we’re the only church going through this), to foster conversation and to discern  new ways to serve and engage their communities.
