Message from Bishop Wallace-Padgett: Poverty Simulation

2/1/2016

Dear Friends,

Christ calls us to be in ministry with the poor. Indeed he tells us that whenever we serve someone in need, we serve him. (Matthew 25:34-40) This is one reason that “ministry with the poor” is a North Alabama Conference priority. Dr. Lewis Archer and an operational team he leads are working diligently to equip more of our clergy and laity for ministry in this vital area.

The Poverty Simulation is a way for each of us to increase our awareness and understanding of the challenges experienced by people who have insufficient financial resources. The Ministry with the Poor Operational Team is organizing this simulation to allow participants to get a small taste of what it may be like for our brothers and sisters living at or below the poverty line. Did you know that the poverty line established by the federal government is just $23,834 for a family of four?

You can read more of the details about the Poverty Simulation by clicking here. I hope that after you read this article, you are inspired to join me in registering for the Poverty Simulation which will take place on the morning of February 27 at Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. I believe it will be a life-changing experience for those of us who attend.

As always it is a privilege to serve as your bishop.

Blessings,
Debra Wallace-Padgett
Resident Bishop
North Alabama Conference
