Huffman UMC Delivers Christmas Baskets to Community

During Wednesday night activities in the weeks leading to Christmas, members of Huffman UMC in Birmingham discussed ways to reach out to the community. One of the projects embraced by the congregation was to prepare and deliver baskets to people who had to work on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day.

Each Wednesday night in December, at least one of the activities included brainstorming, writing cards, and gathering materials. On December 17, Christmas baskets and bags were assembled. The following Sunday, 47 baskets were blessed during morning worship.

Members distributed baskets in the Huffman community to nurses' stations and waiting rooms of the ER and ICUs of St. Vincent's East on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Baskets and bags were also distributed to fire stations, wait staff, cleaning crews and others who were working on the holiday. The deliveries were a blessing for recipients and church members alike.

Some members went in groups to deliver baskets and bags. Church member Alice Sterrett said, "Three of us took baskets to St. Vincent's East at about 1 a.m. on Christmas Day. The nurses were excited to receive them."  Dolores Bunn reported that people in the ER seemed to appreciate the thoughtfulness.  And according to Kathy Brimer, the firefighters were thankful for their baskets.
