Alabama Emmaus Board sponsoring Emmaus Walk Spiritual Director training for clergy on Jan. 27

The Alabama Emmaus Board is sponsoring a clergy training session led by the Upper Room on January 27, 2017.  This critical training is designed for clergy who would like to serve as an Alabama Emmaus Walk Spiritual Director. It will also be an informative session for clergy who have already served in this capacity and will provide a time of fellowship with other Emmaus Clergy members.

The training will be held at Sumatanga and will start at 9 a.m. and finish by 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided by the Alabama Emmaus Community.

The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The objective of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip participants for Christian action in their homes, churches, communities and places of work.

The Alabama Emmaus Board of Directors recently changed the rules for serving as a new Spiritual Director or Assistant Spiritual Director of an Emmaus Walk.

The new requirements for serving as a new Assistant Spiritual Director are:

  1. Been a pilgrim on a weekend Emmaus /Chrysalis or other recognized fourth day movement.
  2. Completed the 3 page Emmaus /Chrysalis Clergy Team Application Form, which is available for download at the Alabama Emmaus website

The requirements for serving as a new walk Spiritual Director are:

  1. Same as above
  2. Must have served on a minimum of two Alabama Emmaus Community Weekends
  3. Have given two different clergy talks.  Note: Walk Spiritual Director is required to give “Means of Grace” talk.
  4. Must be authorized by their ordaining body and able to consecrate Holy Communion Elements at Emmaus (not just in local church).
  5. Have attended Upper Room Training and provided said certification to the Alabama Emmaus Community.
  6. Invited to serve by the Alabama Emmaus Community Spiritual Director.

Clergy who have previously served are grandfathered in the system and the new requirements do not apply.

Clergy who plan on attending should notify Carolyn Phillips at the Alabama Emmaus Office by emailing her at or calling 256-315-2346.
