Benedictine Silent Retreat scheduled for September 7-9

In 1988, the late Claude Whitehead, UMC pastor, counselor and spiritual director, began the Silent Retreats at Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman. Since then, Silent Retreats have been offered twice a year as a means of spiritual formation. This year, the Fall Retreat is scheduled Thursday-Saturday, September 7-9, so that clergy who are interested can attend without missing a Sunday in church.

The Benedictine Silent Retreats continue to follow the format Rev. Whitehead created. The theme of the 2017 retreats are “Listen, My Child.” A retreat guide is available, if needed, and community worship times are built into the schedule. The peaceful environment and beautiful grounds at the Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center provide a contemplative atmosphere that encourages one to slow down the frantic pace of life today and spend time alone with God. In addition, the Benedictine Sisters welcome retreatants to join the monastic community for Lauds and Vespers as they beautifully live out St. Benedict’s advice to “welcome the stranger as Christ.” Those attending will receive 2.5 CEUs if needed.

Participants will be housed in private rooms in Benet Hall with bed and bath linens provided. Space is limited so rooms are reserved in order of deposits received. Cost is $190, which includes meals and accommodations. Participants should bring a Bible and pen. If you have questions about the retreat weekend, please contact Deanna Shotts or Susie Knedlik.
