Birmingham First UMC's City Kids ARTS Camp still going strong

August 09, 2017

Nine years ago First United Methodist Church of Birmingham began a community outreach children’s camp including surrounding area ministries. The camp quickly became a favorite for all involved. Children of various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds gathered for a week in June to participate in this one-of-a-kind camp.

“God Colors our World” was the theme of the 2017 ARTS Camp and included music, art, percussion, dance and an interactive Bible Story. It was a great success and an enriching experience for all involved. The camp culminated in a program of celebration including the 150 children and youth leaders in addition to a large number of family and friends in attendance.

A unique feature of being a downtown church is that children from all over Birmingham gather beyond their own neighborhoods for worship. The Birmingham First congregation has continued to develop its welcoming theology over the past few years. They hope each member of the congregation will embrace the church’s six main priorities as they worship, grow and serve together: practice hospitality, embody diversity, do justice, encourage authenticity, create an inclusive community, and embrace tough questions. City Kids ARTS Camp teaches real world ways to practice these ideals.
