Disaster Response Update: Hurricane Matthew (updated Oct. 22)

10/10/2016

October 22

North Carolina

We have just received word that the North Carolina Conference is opening for Early Response Teams.

Here is the contact information from the North Carolina Conference:

Interested ERT teams can reach out to our Disaster Response Committee for specific priority locations, needs, and scheduling at disasterresponse@nccumc.org or they can call 1-888-440-9167.

The Bahamas

The Bahamas is requesting UMVIM teams in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. The Methodist community in the Bahamas has suffered adverse damage to several churches and a major setback to the completion of the renovation work at St. Paul's Methodist College.

Coordinate any teams through the UMVIM, SEJ Office (http://umvim.org).

Continue to pray for all those affected by this hurricane.

October 10 - 4 p.m.

I have just finished a Conference Call with UMCOR and the Conferences impacted by Hurricane Matthew.  Assessments are still coming in and many areas are still closed off due to flooding and crews still working on restoring utilities.

The most urgent needs are being reported from the South Carolina Conference. Six of their 12 Districts received significant damage, whether winds, flooding or both. Four of these Districts are going to require Long Term Recovery work. They have already received confirmation from some survivors who recently moved back into their homes after being damaged by last year's flooding and now they are flooded again. No assessments have been made in the islands off the coast.

The South Carolina Conference is requesting help.  The following are specifically requested help:

  1. Teams or individuals who can assist with Assessments
  2. Teams for clean-up
  3. Skid Steers/Bobcats with operators
  4. Chainsaw Teams
  5. Brooms & Mops
  6. "Green" Help (money) for both U.S. and the International Disaster Response Funds

They are requesting Cleaning Buckets but our UMCOR Warehouse System is working on providing those items.

October 10 - 11:30 a.m.

By now we are all aware of the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew from the Caribbean to the eastern coastline of the United States.

I have just received confirmation from the UMVIM, SEJ office that the South Carolina Conference has issued a request and an invitation for Teams from outside their Conference to assist in clean-up operations from the Hurricane and from other recent weather events. Please DO NOT go until you have received confirmation of the location where you are needed. If you have a Team that wishes to go, please contact Gray Miller at the  UMVIM, SEJ office at Gray_Miller@umvim.org or call the UMVIM office at 205-453-9480 and she will help make the connections.

There are other ways that you can help directly at this time. You can donate to UMCOR:

  • International Disaster Fund Advance #982450 for areas affected in the Caribbean

  • U.S. Disaster Fund Advance #901670 for areas impacted in the U.S.

You can send your congregation's UMCOR gift through our North Alabama Conference Treasurer's office. Make sure you designate the Advance number(s) to apply your gift.

Our office will send out regular updates as accurate information is shared with us. Please continue praying for all of the survivors because praying isn't the least you can do; it is the most important thing you can do! Remember that prayer is not our last resort, but our first response in such a time as this.

Randy Burbank
