Like myself, you have been watching The Weather Channel to get the latest information on Hurricane Laura. I have been in conversation with our Disaster Response Warehouse in Decatur, Alabama, and awaiting information from UMCOR and the Disaster Response Coordinators from the affected Annual Conferences.
To say this situation is fluid is not a pun nor is it an exaggeration. After talking with Cindy Sandlin at our Decatur Warehouse everything thing there is in good shape right now with supplies. Do not send any supplies to the Decatur until they ask for them; then only send what they request. They are waiting for directions where to send these supplies.
The track of Laura is now in Arkansas and will head into Tennessee. There is a possibility that North Alabama could see wind and/or tornadoes as the system moves through. There is the potential for our supplies to be sent to any of a number of states. So sit tight for now.
The Decatur Warehouse does not need supplies or volunteers at this time. We will let you know the needs as they become available. Do not collect anything but GREEN (money) at this time. Our office will be sharing where those green donations will go as we are made aware of them. For many people, the hardest thing to do in times like this is to do nothing. Rest assured there IS something you can do.
First, pray! Pray for the emergency workers. Their work will make it possible for Relief Teams to go in to do their work.
Second, collect the GREEN! The needs now will be great and the needs in the long term recovery will be even greater.
We will be planning some large group training opportunities shortly. Watch for the email updates. Forward this email to your fellow church members. Better yet, encourage them to sign up for our email updates.
