Fair Haven begins construction on new independent living homes for Birmingham seniors

The final phase of Fair Haven’s $42 million renovation and construction project expected to open in fall 2017.

Over the course of the last 18 months, the team at Fair Haven, Birmingham’s largest continuing care retirement community, has been hard at work to complete a $42 million renovation and construction project. Fair Haven has opened new assisted living, rehabilitation, and long-term care accommodations, renovated existing units, and transitioned to the Household Model, all to better serve Birmingham’s growing senior population.

Construction and renovation has now moved to the center section of the community to add 15 new independent living and 23 new assisted living apartment homes. The new independent living apartment homes come in one and two bedroom options, with kitchens featuring a spacious pantry, stainless steel appliances, smooth cooktops, and a pass through to the dining and living areas. The bathrooms are designed for safety and comfort, with curbless showers.

“Everyone is excited about the new apartment homes,” said Earnestine Thompson, Residential Administrator. “There’s a real demand here. People want to go to places that have a good name and reputation, and that’s Fair Haven.”

In addition to the new apartment homes, the project includes changes and upgrades for the common areas, including a new beauty/barber salon, gift shop, and grand living room with fireplace. Dining options will include formal, restaurant-style dining, a casual bistro, and an ice cream parlor.

Residents of the new apartment homes will receive the same extraordinary service and care Birmingham has come to expect from Methodist Homes’ flagship retirement community, in beautiful, updated spaces.

“Fair Haven was one of the first on the map for setting the stage for retirement,” said Thompson. “We’re a church-affiliated community with a strong history that treats residents like they’re family. We’re already seeing interest in these apartment homes, and we haven’t finished building them!”
