Long Memorial UMC's food closet receives large donation

Long Memorial UMC (Central District) in Cordova, Alabama, received a donation of more than 2800 food items for the congregation’s food closet. The donation came from Bankhead Middle School.

Three students helped load the food items which filled both a pickup truck belonging to Long Memorial UMC pastor Rev. Charlie Brown, as well as, an SUV belonging to Bankhead Middle School teacher Donna King.

Rev. Brown explains, “This food will be the basis for Long Memorial United Methodist Church’s food closet. In the next year, hundreds of meals will be given to people in and around Cordova.  Our members add their contributions to the food given by the school each year and when people in the area run out of food many of them know that they can turn to the church for help.”

Next week, the food closet coordinator Sabra Brown and her team will begin organizing the large donation of food away in the food closet. They check each donated item to make sure it is good for at least a year. Any food that will reach its expiration date before the fall of 2020 is put in a fast dispersal area. Mrs. Brown will contact persons the church knows frequently need help with food in an effort to make sure all the food is distributed to the community.
