Message from Bishop Wallace-Padgett: Read Together 2021

12/8/2020

Dear Friends,

A well-read Anglican priest and Oxford scholar, John Wesley owned many books and publications. But his “go-to” book for doctrine, theology, guidance and inspiration was the Bible. Indeed, he called himself a homo unius libri, “a man of one book.”

No wonder a high view of Scripture is one of the hallmarks of United Methodists. In addition to important history and inspired insight, we encounter the living Christ in the pages of Scripture.

This is one of the reasons that in 2019 and 2020 our North Alabama Conference Adult Discipleship Team has provided the Read Together Initiative, an annual schedule for reading through the Bible. It is an amazing accomplishment to read the entire Bible in a year! Congratulations to those who have made that journey with us in 2019 and/or 2020.

The response from North Alabama United Methodists to Read Together has been so positive that we have organized for more of the same in 2021. Our 2021 reading schedule and podcasts will be based on a five-day plan on Mondays through Fridays and the Revised Common Lectionary on the weekends. (Utilized in varying degrees by the majority of mainline Protestant denominations in the United States and Canada, the Revised Common Lectionary is a three-year calendar of Scripture passages for Sundays and other special days. See http://ee.umc.org/what-we-believe/glossary-lectionary and https://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/faq2.php) The weekly podcasts will be based on the previous weekend’s lectionary readings.

To participate in Read Together 2021, register today at www.umcna.org/readtogether. I look forward to reading through the Bible together with many North Alabama United Methodists in 2021. What a great way to ensure that we continually immerse ourselves in the “go to” book for Christian living.

As always, it is a privilege to serve as your bishop.

Blessings,
Debra Wallace-Padgett
Resident Bishop
