Missions Monday: Hokes Bluff First UMC's story

September 09, 2019

On August 3, 2019, more than120 people gathered at Hokes Bluff First UMC in the Mountain Lakes District to build 100 beds for children in Alabama who do not have a bed to sleep on at night. Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a ministry in Southside, Alabama, sponsored this mission.

The 120 volunteers included church members as well as people from the surrounding community in Etowah County.

The original goal was to build 20 beds, but the goal was far exceeded by the financial support from the church & community! Each bed cost $350 for labor and materials, and all money was raised before construction began.

"The mission was a life-changing way to be the hands and feet of our blessed LORD Jesus to people in need," said Pastor Eddie Gooch.

Bicentennial Celebration of Missions

For more than 200 years, Methodists from all continents have engaged in mission work that has transformed the world through the “work of justice, alleviate suffering; build peace; heal the sick; empower women; train leaders; and witness to the kingdom of God.” This year’s bicentennial celebration recognizes the mission work that has been done over the years.

The North Alabama Conference is celebrating the mission work of our congregations and organizations. You are invited to share your mission stories through an article or a short video. Send your congregation's stories to akufarimai@umcna.org.
