Time is running out to register for the United Methodist Lawyers' Forum


The United Methodist Lawyers' Forum will be at Asbury UMC in Birmingham on Thursday, September 22, 2016. The event is jointly sponsored by the North Alabama and Alabama-West Florida Conferences of the United Methodist Church.

The forum, which is free to all United Methodist attorneys in both Conferences, has been approved for CLE credits in Alabama and Florida. The following credits have been approved: 7.0 CLEs available to Florida Lawyers (including 1 hour Ethics); 6.0 CLEs available to Alabama Lawyers (including 1 hour Ethics); and 1.0 CEU to Clergy.

Topics to be covered include sexual misconduct, real property, child abuse and neglect, copyright issues, employment practices and vicarious liability for churches and church-related organizations.

The day will feature distinguished presenters including the following:

  • Dawn Hare, General Secretary of the UMC's Commission on the Status and Role of Women (COSROW)
  • Steve Lambert, General Counsel to the UMC's Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA)
  • Sue Bell Cobb, Alabama Chief Justice
  • Joy Melton, nationally-recognized expert on Safe Sanctuaries
  • Dr. Richard Hammar, author of Church Law and Tax Report
  • Tony McLain, General Counsel of the Alabama State Bar Association
