UMC #GivingTuesday will be November 29

As a passionate disciple of Jesus Christ, your participation is vital to living out God’s mission through The United Methodist Church. Every day you are giving light, giving love, and giving to a world in need through your prayers, presence, gifts, and service.

November 29, you are invited to come together with thousands of United Methodists to support the work of Advance projects and missionaries on UMC #GivingTuesday.

The Advance remains committed to sustaining a strong foundation that allows projects and missionaries to build relationships and empower their ministries. As always, 100 percent of all gifts to The Advance goes directly to the missionary or project selected. Last year, nearly 6,000 donors from 27 countries donated $2.8 million through The Advance to support mission and ministries around the world. This year, while matching funds will not be available,  generous supporters can continue their commitment to vital ministry.

UMC #GivingTuesday is part of an international movement that builds on the recent U.S. shopping traditions of Black Friday, Local Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. It offers an opportunity to start off the holiday season by giving through supporting organizations that have been researched and approved by the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries.

Leaders can download UMC #GivingTuesday resources to help your congregation get involved and spread the message of generosity. You’ll find the answers to frequently asked questions, social media images and tips, and creative ways to extend the giving spirit.

Here are a few ideas to share with your congregation:

  • Ask church members to take a “selfless selfie” holding a sign with UMC #GivingTuesday and a note about the project or mission they are supporting. Encourage them to post their selfless selfies on social media.
  • Suggest that they donate time, whisper a prayer or create other non-financial ways to support missionaries or projects to supplement monetary gifts.
  • Have them consider asking friends and family to make an early Christmas gift in their honor to their favorite Advance project or missionary on Nov. 29, or encourage them to make a gift in honor of those on their list. For those who still want to give wrapped gifts, suggest accompanying the notification with a token representing the designated ministry (a framed map of the region, a water bottle for a water project, a hammer for a construction project, etc.). They can even design or purchase cards that reflect the theme of the ministry.

This Advent, encourage your congregation to “Give Light, Give Love and Give Life” through The Advance at
