Discovery Weekend is a spiritual formation retreat that provides an opportunity for middle schoolers to learn about and experience the love of God. High school students,
youth workers, other adult volunteers, and church staff lead the weekend, allowing the entire church to surround young people with faithful examples of love and forgiveness.
Originally conceived by Rev. Melody Traylor when she was appointed to Tuscaloosa First UMC, Discovery Weekend was inspired by her experiences with The Upper
Room’s Academy of Spiritual Formation and Walk to Emmaus programs. Many churches in North Alabama have used the Discovery Weekend program to nurture youth in the faith.
Due to Discovery Weekend’s formative nature and origin, The Upper Room is thrilled to offer this ministry to the wider church as a trustworthy and transforming model for supporting the spiritual formation of an age group that many churches have little idea what to do with beyond presenting them with fun and games.
In April 2018, The Upper Room launched a new and improved version of Rev. Traylor’s first manual, Discover God’s Love through the Church. The second Discovery Weekend manual, Discover God’s Love through Scripture, is now available. The Upper Room plans to release a third manual, Discover God’s love through Everyday
Life, in 2020.
